29 Halloween Decoration Ideas That Go Way Beyond a Few Pumpkins

Some families put out two pumpkins and call it a day. Others somehow end up with skeletons climbing the roof, giant movie monsters in the yard and an entire garage turned into a haunted scene. I definitely prefer the second group.

So I pulled together some of the funniest, creepiest and just plain weird Halloween decoration ideas I could find.

There are easy little projects in here, a few completely ridiculous setups, and plenty of ideas you can steal without turning your whole house into a horror movie set.

Halloween Decoration Ideas

1. The Aliens Came for Cider

Okay, this is a whole production. The crashed UFO is already wild, but adding pumpkin-headed aliens and the little “we come for cider” sign makes it so much better. I love when Halloween decorations commit this hard to one stupidly fun idea.

2. Finger Hot Dogs

These are gross in exactly the right way. A few little cuts in the hot dogs make them look surprisingly finger-like, then ketchup handles the rest of the damage. Super easy for a Halloween party, and yes, they look slightly disgusting on purpose.

3. Something in the Mirror

Imagine walking past this thing at night and forgetting you put it there. The long hair covering the face makes the whole setup way creepier without needing a bunch of extra decorations around it. Honestly, the weird hands coming through the mirror are enough for me.

4. Ceiling Nightmare

Now this is mean. 😂 Hanging one creepy figure upside down across the porch ceiling puts it exactly where people probably won’t notice it until they’re already underneath it. I would absolutely leave this up just to watch people discover it one by one.

5. Georgie and the Red Balloon

If you know It, you know exactly what this is supposed to be. Georgie standing there in the yellow raincoat with that single red balloon is creepy enough without adding much else.

I’d put him somewhere slightly off to the side of the yard too, like he’s just been standing there waiting for somebody to notice him.

6. I See You

Using the garage door like this is such a good idea because the whole thing becomes part of the decoration.

The giant clown creeping up from underneath is already bad enough, then you notice the giant “I SEE YOU” above him. Yeah, no thanks.

7. The Full Graveyard Setup

Okay, this is for the people who do not believe in decorating halfway. Coffins, gravestones, pumpkins, candles, creepy figures and that red lighting in the background make the whole porch feel like a little haunted cemetery.

There is a lot going on, but somehow it all works together.

8. Pumpkin With a Xenomorph Problem

This one is such a weird little Halloween idea, and that’s exactly why it works.

Instead of just carving a face, they turned the pumpkin into a full alien attack scene, with the creature bursting out and the seeds and pulp spilling everywhere like total chaos.

It’s messy, goofy, a little gross, and honestly the kind of decoration people would stop to look at twice.

9. Turn the Garage Into a Graveyard

This is such a good way to use a huge blank garage door. The cemetery scene does most of the work, then the skeletons, pumpkins and little lights around it make the whole thing feel like a proper Halloween setup. I really like that it looks big without needing fifty different decorations.

10. Halloween Took Over the Kitchen

This is for the people who decorate literally every room, and I respect it.

Orange lights around the doorway completely change the mood, then all the little pumpkins, witchy signs, candles and random spooky stuff fill in the rest.

Nothing here is super complicated, but together it looks ridiculously cozy at night.

11. The Spiderweb Dinner Table

I love when the Halloween table is part creepy and part actually pretty. Black plates, little pumpkins, skulls, candles and fake cobwebs are already enough, but throwing spiders all over the table really finishes it off.

This would be so fun for a Halloween dinner or party without making the food area look completely insane.

12. Giant Beetlejuice Crawling Through the Floor

Okay, this one would absolutely become the decoration everyone talks about. The giant Beetlejuice head, striped suit and enormous skeleton hands make it look like he is literally crawling up through the house.

It is ridiculous, huge and very hard to ignore, which is basically everything I want from a Halloween decoration.

13. The Garage of Nightmares

At this point the garage has officially been taken over. Lining up a bunch of full-size creepy characters like this makes the whole space feel like a mini haunted house before anyone even gets inside.

I’d leave the garage door partly open at night too, just enough for people to see what’s waiting in there.

14. Pumpkins Everywhere

This porch has a little bit of everything without feeling messy. The black pumpkins, orange lights, bats, spiderwebs and all those branches around the doorway make it feel really full, but the fall leaves keep it from going completely dark and scary. The wreath in the middle is probably my favorite part.

15. Hanging Eyeballs

Well, these are weirdly fun. Hanging giant eyeballs from vines or branches is one of those decorations that takes almost no space but still makes people look twice.

I’d probably mix a bunch of them at different heights so it looks like the whole porch is watching you.

16. The Balcony Pumpkin Creature

Now imagine looking up and seeing this guy leaning over the balcony.

The huge glowing pumpkin head, ragged clothes and vines hanging everywhere make him look like some strange fall creature that moved into the building.

The two little jack-o’-lanterns hanging from his arms are a really nice touch too.

17. The Little Pumpkin Reaper

I love how simple this one is. A glowing carved pumpkin, a long black hood and a hay bale underneath, and suddenly you’ve got this tiny creepy figure standing in the yard.

He looks like he has absolutely no business being this cute and threatening at the same time.

18. Turn the Whole House Into a Monster

This is such a smart use of the actual house. Two giant eyeballs in the arches, a ridiculous row of teeth across the balcony and spiders crawling up the wall, and suddenly the building itself looks hungry. You really do not need to cover every inch either. The huge face is what sells it.

19. The Zebra Clown

I genuinely would not know what to do if I walked into somebody’s yard and saw this. 😂 The zebra is already unexpected, then somebody gave it a pink party hat, a sparkly tulle collar and little pom-poms because apparently it needed a clown career.

This is exactly the kind of random Halloween decoration that makes a display feel like somebody actually had fun putting it together.

20. Let the Bats Take Over the Kitchen

Those little black bats work ridiculously well against white cabinets. Instead of lining them up neatly, scatter them across different doors and let the group get bigger as it moves through the kitchen.

Add pumpkins above the cabinets, a few orange lights and one giant spider somewhere it absolutely does not belong, and you are pretty much done.

21. Give the Old Pumpkin Buckets a Makeover

Those classic plastic jack-o’-lantern candy pails are way too good to disappear into a closet after trick-or-treating.

Paint over the faces, exaggerate the eyes and smiles, or make every pumpkin slightly different and use them around the house as decor.

Older versions of these blow-mold-style pumpkin pails have been around for decades, so this is also a fun one to hunt for secondhand.

22. The Family That Took It Too Far

This family clearly decided a few pumpkins were not going to cut it.

A whole car hanging over the yard, skeletons crawling out of the ground and another little structure dangling from the tree is completely unhinged in the best way. This is the kind of house kids would remember for years.

23. Skeletons Taking Over the House

I love that these are not just standing around the lawn. They are climbing the roof, hanging off the siding, crawling through the grass and basically acting like they own the place now.

Spreading them out like this makes the whole house feel like one big scene instead of a bunch of separate decorations.

24. Glowing Ghost Family

These sheet ghosts are ridiculously simple, but at night they look so good. Put lights underneath, give each one a slightly different face and line them through the yard like a little ghost family. The hanging pumpkin lanterns above them make the whole thing feel extra magical without losing the Halloween vibe.

25. The Giant Pumpkin Ghost

This one feels like something you would accidentally see at the edge of a field and immediately turn the car around.

The huge jack-o’-lantern head, long draped body and old wooden grave markers make it feel properly creepy without needing a ton of different props. The green light underneath is a really good touch too.

26. A Demogorgon in the Backyard

Now this is a pretty great Stranger Things reference. The giant Demogorgon already has that horrible petal-shaped mouth, but lighting the whole thing red makes it look even nastier after dark.

I’d put this one behind a fence or partially hidden too, so it feels like something from the Upside Down just wandered into the neighborhood.

27. Make the House Look Hungry

This family turned the entire front porch into one giant monster face, and I love how simple the idea is when you break it down.

Two huge eyes upstairs, teeth around the entrance, and suddenly the front door becomes the mouth. The red carpet leading inside makes it even better, like the house is politely inviting you to get eaten. 😂

28. Giant Skeleton Guarding the Walkway

A giant skeleton already gets attention, but giving him a skeleton dog and putting a massive spider across the lawn makes the whole yard feel like its own little Halloween world.

I also like the line of jack-o’-lanterns running up the walkway because it gives all the huge props some structure instead of just dropping them randomly across the grass.

29. Mummies in the Front Yard

This family really committed to one theme, and it paid off. The tall mummies standing between gravestones look especially good with warm lights pointed up from the ground, while the loose fabric and cobwebs make everything feel old and dusty.

It is creepy without needing blood, gore or a hundred different props.

That’s it for this list. Some of these are easy enough to pull off in an afternoon, and some are clearly for families who have decided Halloween is a full-time job. Either way, I hope you found at least one idea worth stealing this year.
